Eco-Safe R-410A Refrigerant & MrCool

Eco-safe R-410A refrigerant is the new standard for American air conditioners and heat pumps. As you might expect, it’s also the main refrigerant we use here at MrCool. The government, of course, required companies like us to adopt refrigerants like R-410A, but do you know why?

The answer might surprise you. Or it might not. I really have no idea how informed you are about international chemical emissions agreements.

Eco-Safe R-410A, Freon and That Ominous Hole in the Ozone Layer

Have you heard of the Montreal Protocol? It’s the reason why eco-safe R-410A and other ozone-friendly refrigerants are in common use today. You can trace a straight line between our use of R-410A and the agreements made in Montreal way, way back in 1987. It was there that an international meeting of world leaders agreed our civilization must scale back our use of ozone-depleting refrigerants like Freon and other chlorofluorocarbons.

Which is a hard word to work into casual conversation. You should try it though. People love stuff like that.

Anyway, the world back in the 1980’s was understandably worried about the giant hole growing in the ozone layer above Antarctica. Mainly because the ozone layer is the part of the atmosphere that stops solar radiation from mutating us all into walking blobs of cancer. Which is bad. The wide spread use of CFCs had helped grow that hole. It took a lot of hemming and hawing between world leaders before everyone agreed a slow, painful death from solar radiation was bad, so maybe let’s stop using all those CFCs.

And that was a problem in and of itself. The world used a lot of CFCs in everything from hair spray to, surprise, air conditioners. Now, obviously, no one wanted to give up sticky hair or air comfort. Civilization needed a chemical that could do all the things CFCs did, but, y’know, without all the potential for inevitable death.

Enter eco-safe R-410A! R-410A is a chlorine-free refrigerant with minimal ozone-depleting ability. In other words, you can use it without worrying about eventually destroying the entire human race in a solar radiation-driven apocalypse.

So, that’s nice.

  1. Can I buy a Mr cool diy in the USA and bring it across the border into Canada. Would it meet our standard so no problems at the border. Also where is your closest retailer to Winnipeg Manitoba. Thanks Rod

    1. I believe the DIY does comply with Canada’s SEER requirements. I also know we’ve already had some Canadian customers take their units across the border without issue. The closest dealer to you would be Fergus Home and hardware in Fergus, Minnesota. Their phone number is 218-998-5070.

  2. How can we get a couple of these units to Maui? Are these safe for air freight? Can they be shipped by sea? Since we have found no dealers willing to ship can we buy on the mainland and ship ourselves?
    Thanks

    1. They are safe for air freight, they can be shipped by sea, and, yes, you can ship them yourselves. We’ve never shipped anything to Maui, as far as I know, but I can’t imagine it would be a problem.

    1. Yes, R-410a can be added to MRCOOL ductless units. You should be able to order a MRCOOL unit through any Canadian Home Depot or Lowes location.

    2. My Mr Cool is not blowing cold air. Had a/c service out to look. They sad the refrigerant was cracked. It’s not keeping my garage apartment cool. And it’s making a racket. They gave me a price of over a thousand dollars to fix. I can’t afford that. Where could I get one and have it installed.? I’m 77 y/o and need cool air.

  3. I need a dual-zone I built a small barndominium would like to have a unit downstairs and upstairs I do boat and RV repair for a living lot of air conditioning work this be something that I could do do it yourself

    1. An Olympus dual-zone would be the most straightforward solution. It does require vacuuming and charging as per normal ductless installation. As to whether or not that is something you are capable of doing yourself is really impossible for us to determine. Alternatively, you could install one MRCOOL DIY upstairs and a second downstairs. You would almost certainly be able to tackle those yourself.

  4. Does an Olympus multi zone 4 ton compressor come pre-charged. If not how much of the refrigerant 410A need to be instilled? The unit has a note that says design pressure says Hi is 550 PSIG and Lo is 340 PSIG. Also the compressor has a CE code and the 24 K unit in side has a P6 code. The 24k is the only indoor unit connected at this time. The HVAC person we have does not know what these codes mean.(?) or what to do about them. Unfortunately he is the only one in this area.

    1. An Olympus condenser comes pre-charged with refrigerant, but the air handlers and lines do not. As for the rest, have your HVAC person call our tech department at 270-366-0457. We can walk them through the necessary steps.

  5. First I would like to Thank your customer support team! They assisted me with my issue in a very quick manner. Very Impressive!!!
Secondly, is this 410a American made?

  6. I am reading that R410A will be phased out January 2023. Do you have an alternate refrigerant that can be used once R410A is no longer available? Will you be offering new products using a refrigerant other than 410A?
    Sincerely,
    Ron Anderson

    1. If you have the DIY Ductless Mini-Split, then you shouldn’t need to charge the system at all. If you have the Advantage or the Olympus mini-split, the condensers are charged for a certain length of line set, so you will need to add more the longer your line set is. Please give us a call at (270) 366-0457 for more information.

  7. I’m concerned that if I buy MrCool units today, 410a won’t be available (or will be extremely expensive) if I need it in say five years, meaning that I might have to replace the units. When do you plan to have units that use, for example, R32?
