Do You Ductless Mini-Split DIY?

Building your own HVAC unit is not easy. Installing a unit you bought off the shelf is not as difficult, but it’s no walk in the park either. If you don’t know anything about how HVAC systems function, what to do with coolant lines, or the proper application of a screwdriver, you can run into some real problems.

People are into DIY so much we here at MrCool decided it would be a good idea to design a MrCool heating and air system specifically for eager DIY enthusiasts. The MrCool DIY Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump takes a previously impossible task, and makes it achievable by pretty much anyone.

What is a Ductless Mini-Split?

Ductless mini-split heat pumps and air conditioners are a good way for you to get specific, targeted heating and air exactly where you want it. They’re great for cooling down kitchens, sun rooms, new additions to an existing home, or for making a garage or shop bearable in cold winter weather without the necessity of installing ductwork.

What Sets MrCool Apart

The most important components of the MrCool DIY that makes it designed for amateur installation are the precharged ‘Quick Connect’ linesets. Every air conditioning system on the planet uses coolant, and most use chemical coolant. You really need to know what you’re doing when it comes to installing a regular air conditioner.

The MrCool DIY linesets are different. These linesets install easily, and come precharged with refrigerant. You don’t have to know anything about chemical coolants or air conditioner installation to properly connect the coolant linesets on the MrCool DIY.

The electrical work and the base mounting on the MrCool DIY are also designed for easy installation.

As long as you can wield a few basic tools and handle a measuring tape, you can install your own MrCool DIY unit.

And if you ever get stuck, you can always refer to our helpful YouTube videos:

So, don’t worry, and start DIY.

  1. Where can I find the DIY’s unit specifications? I can not find anything worthy of submittal to a qualified county inspector, and the county installation permit process.

Other manufacturers have at least a one page PDF with all the information for an installation permit listed in a table. Most also have more detailed specifications of interest to the User, listed in the installation manuals. (Example: Number of Fan Speeds, SEER Rating, Total Ampacity, etc).

I’m interested in a 12000 BTU 115 VAC DIY model, and I’ve studied the Installation and Owners Guides, and Brochure offerings.

Some information is available, but scattered throughout the document. Some information important to me appears to be missing (running Hi / Med / Lo Noise levels, number of fans speeds.), and some critical (SEER rating) appears to be missing.

Bottomline: I cannot find the specs page, where all this useful data should be listed. Where is the specs page?

    Thanks,

  2. looking to select a unit. I have the ability and tools to charge the system, but I am wondering about exactly which one to get at my local Lowe’s. They don’t stock the units and the salespeople are not knowledgeable on mini split systems. How may I contact your company to speak to someone about this?

  3. Hello and hope all is well. I am looking at 24k DIY unit and was wondering what are the differences in performance between DIY unit and the other professionally installed units? Thank you.

    1. In terms of performance, the units are very similar. The main difference is that the DIY comes with pre-charged line sets and the others do not.

  4. Why is it that some condensers have a 5 year warranty and the DIY enhanced models only have a 2 year warranty?

  5. Hi there, we just purchased or 12000 BTU unit and just looking for specifications about extreme temperatures to store before we install. We live in Texas so ,extreme temperatures can be over a hundred degrees will this be safe?

    1. Vinyl tape should be used to attach the drain hose to the underside of the refrigerant pipe, and insulation tape should be used to bind the refrigerant pipes and the drain hose together. Tape should come with the DIY unit, though.

      1. How does the vinyl tape work, I wrapped it but it doesn’t stick, it isn’t self sticking tape, so curious how you wrap and keep it tight??

  6. I purchased a 24K 3rd Gen Mr. Cool mini-split and installed it according to instructions. Had a local HVAC company inspect and it all looked good. It ran great. And then mice invaded the condenser unit, built a nest, chewed wiring and resulted in condenser error messages and a local installer said the motherboard was shot. They would not bother the repair because the cost of motherboard and labor was not worth it.

OK, I really like the unit, so I just bought a 4th Gen 24K unit from Mr. Cool and It is being delivered this week. I gave up on trying to process the warranty as that process seemed overwhelming and the availability of 3rd Gen computer board seemed not to exist.

HOW DO I MAKE THE NEW CONDENSER UNIT MOUSEPROOF? I will eat the cost of replacement and forget about the warranty this time, but I will not eat this again. So help me improve the life of this new unit and mouseproof the unit.

    1. You may want to try to seal any holes leading to the control board with steel wool. Be sure to regularly check the unit, as well, to look for signs of mice.
