Building Your Own Home HVAC Unit!

Have you ever tried building your own home heating and air system using nothing more than the junk in your grandmother’s garage and/or basement? No? I have. It’s way harder than you think it’s going to be. At first, sure, you make good progress, because you found a fan. Then, everybody in the neighborhood freaks after you lose control of the fire.

But whatever.

The point I’m trying to make is that building your own HVAC unit is not easy. Installing a unit you bought off the shelf is not as difficult, but it’s no walk in the park either. If you don’t know anything about how HVAC systems function, what to do with coolant lines, or the proper application of a screwdriver, you can run into some real problems. The MrCool DIY ductless mini-split heat pump takes a previously impossible task, and makes it achievable.

By pretty much anyone.

I do mean anyone. I successfully installed the prototype MrCool DIY in our main office, and there was only one fatality. He was an intern, so I don’t think it counts. If you don’t have any interns, you have nothing worry about.

Plus, with the MrCool DIY, it’s almost impossible to start a fire that will burn down your grandmother’s entire neighborhood.

  1. Mr. cool,

why do you not put information on your website about the ducted heat pumps. i am looking at one and want more information on them. it seems to me they are pretty new. can not find any reviews by anyone. if i have right information they are warrantied for 10 years. i just find it difficult to buy something that the manufacturer does not even give information on there web site about.

    1. Hi Rose! We will soon have information about conventional (i.e. – ducted) heat pumps on our website very soon. To answer your question, most heat pump manufacturers will usually give you a 5-10 year warranty. Our warranties vary dependent on the model you choose, but 5 years is the minimum. Do you have any other questions?

  2. I want to install a Mrcool mini split in my house. However, I am unable to pick what I need… for instance I need 12k, 12k, 9k, 9k air handlers and 16 ft, 16ft, 25ft, 50ft line sets. Do you know what retailer is able to accommodate my requirements?

  3. I am in need of 3 zone 36k btu with ceiling cassettes of 9k-9k-18k. Can you please tell me if that is an available combo.
    Thank you for your help

    1. We do not have ceiling cassettes in our DIY series, and the smallest ceiling cassette that we have (in our Olympus series, which must be installed by an HVAC professional)is a 12k BTU unit.
