It’s summer again — the time of year you spend turning the AC on and off because you can’t seem to find the right temperature. This year could be different if you get a new AC unit that saves you money and keeps you cool through those sunny, hot months. As a bonus, you may even find a heater to get you ready for the winter that’s coming at the end of the year.

Since heating and cooling costs make up 42% of your energy bill each month, consider installing a ductless split system HVAC to save money and be comfortable all year long. A wall-mounted air conditioner and heater sends the right temperature to each room instead of blowing the same air throughout your whole house. Here are the five benefits of a ductless heating and cooling system:

1. Reduced Costs

Cooling and heating costs can get expensive, especially if you live in an area with both high and low temperatures. A ductless mini-split AC can save you money on your energy costs while refreshing your family in the summer. Even though it tends to cost a little extra, your wallet will thank you for installing a ductless HVAC unit.

Here are some of the ways an efficient ductless HVAC can ease the financial burden of keeping your home cool:

  • It uses less energy: A split system HVAC operates on less power than conventional heating and cooling equipment. Since it’s compact, it doesn’t require a lot of energy. Rather than blowing from one central component on the other end of the house, the indoor handler unit sends air directly from the outside condenser into the room. With this system that doesn’t need to transport air from far distances, you are less likely to lose heat in the winter.
  • It runs in one place at a time: A ductless air conditioner allows you to create zones throughout your living space, which will enable you to cool only the room that you’re using. If you’re home alone, you can cool or heat the area you spend most of the day instead of wasting energy by blowing air through your whole house.
  • It qualifies for reimbursements: If you invest in an energy-efficient air conditioner, you could be eligible for a tax incentive or rebate from the manufacturer.
  • It heats and cools your house: Older homes with outdated boiler systems could result in lower indoor air quality and higher energy bills. When you upgrade to ductless heating and cooling, the same unit provides a comfortable temperature all year round, so you can easily keep track of it and focus on lowering your energy costs.
  • It’s easy to install: Since you don’t need the help of an HVAC technician to install a DIY ductless mini-split system, you can save on installation costs. All you need is the unit itself, a couple of tools and a free afternoon. You’ll save money and feel a sense of ownership and accomplishment that you handled this challenging task on your own.

Along with switching to an energy-efficient ductless air conditioner, you can also increase your savings on heating and cooling costs by upgrading your insulation and weatherstripping your windows, entry doors and garage door. Instead of throwing your money from an energy-efficient air conditioner out the window, properly seal your home to hold onto your hard-earned cash.

2. Better Air Quality

Traditional HVAC systems are a pain to clean, and they trap allergens and pollutants from the outside. As a result, they’ll blow these contaminants into your living space and reduce the indoor air quality of your home. A wall-mounted air conditioner allows you to breathe better in your own living space because of the following features:

  • Multi-stage filtration: The filters of standard HVAC systems can trap large debris and allergens, but they could miss some of the tiny dust particles that trigger allergies and asthma attacks. Ductless mini-split systems include filtration cartridges that help to eliminate most airborne particles from your living space — including microbes, dander, pollen and mites — so you can breathe in clean air all year long. They are also easy to clean and replace without much maintenance.
  • No infection from ductwork: A traditional HVAC unit with ductwork can collect allergens and viruses that could make you and your family sick. With the air leaks that come from the registers in a home with central air, you could be breathing in these pollutants when you’re running the AC. If you have a ductless HVAC system, you don’t have vents that could contaminate your living space. The only air you’ll breathe comes straight from the indoor air handler after it has gone through a filtration process.
  • Humidity control: Part of your air conditioner’s responsibility is to reduce the moisture in your home to prevent mold and mildew. If a traditional AC unit is too big for a room, it delivers periodic bursts of air through a short cycle, which puts wear and tear on the cooling system. The inverter technology of a ductless mini-split AC allows the unit to maintain the desired indoor temperature by making small adjustments in output. Since it has a longer cycle, it has time to remove the excess humidity in the air.

3. Better for the Environment

A ductless room air conditioner can reduce your carbon footprint by using less energy to maintain the temperature of your house. Energy-efficient HVAC systems have an ENERGY STAR certification, which demonstrates compliance with standards from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Along with promoting a better planet, using less energy in your living space also lowers the money you pay on your energy bill.

Ductless air conditioners are better for the environment due to these benefits:

  • Safer refrigerant: Refrigerant is what cools the air temperature coming into your house from the outside. While most of this liquid material has been unsafe over the years, recent advances in chemistry have allowed HVAC manufacturers to use R410A, which doesn’t have the potential to deplete the ozone layer. As a result, the refrigerant of your wall air conditioner won’t have such a harsh impact on the environment.
  • No energy loss: The energy that leaks through ducts accounts for more than 30% of energy consumption from traditional HVAC units. On a hot day, warm air could seep in through the vents and make the HVAC system need to work harder to produce a comfortable temperature. Since ductless air conditioners don’t use these vents, they retain all their energy and create fewer carbon emissions while running.
  • Higher energy-efficiency: You would know the energy-efficiency of your air conditioner by its seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER). This number measures the quality of energy expenditure of a room air conditioner over the summer. As long as your AC unit is the right size for the room, you’ll save energy while cooling your home with a system that has a higher SEER rating. Our energy-efficient ductless mini-split systems have a SEER rating as high as 23.
  • Flexible placement: You could put a ductless HVAC unit almost anywhere you want. Since heating and cooling systems operate one room at a time, you can control the temperature in each part of your house. If you like your bedroom cold in the winter, your family member doesn’t have to sit with their teeth chattering in the room next to you. Instead, you can all have a comfortable temperature that your whole family will enjoy, and you’ll save energy in the process.
  • Programmable operation: Many ductless systems have smartphone apps and programmable operations that allow users to adjust settings according to their preference. When you leave your living space or turn in for the night, your HVAC system could be set to turn onto an energy-saving temperature, so it won’t waste energy providing a comfortable environment for an empty house. Upon your arrival back home or into the living room after a long night of sleep, your ductless heating and cooling will adjust to provide a pleasant atmosphere for you and your family.

4. Quiet Operation

Even though cooler air is supposed to help you sleep at night, the loud cranking of an air conditioner can keep you awake. A ductless HVAC operates quietly, so you can set it and forget that it’s even running. The following components allow the system to make less noise:

  • Use of inverter technology: Ductless air conditioners can use inverter technology to control the compressor motor’s speed. Air conditioners with this feature have increased energy-efficiency compared to traditional AC units. Since they use this technology, they don’t make as much noise as they move. It also preserves the life of the parts in your HVAC system, which means there won’t be a lot of grinding and screeching noises from parts that need replacements.
  • Lack of ductwork: It might not seem like ductwork has a lot to do with the noise level of your HVAC system, but think about it. Since most central AC units require ducts to blow air throughout the home, how do ductless systems do it? Ductless heating and cooling units use small tubes that connect the outside to the inside, instead of traveling through the whole house. Air flows from the wall unit instead of registers, so you’d probably hear more sounds coming out of a box fan than out of your ductless mini-split.
  • The outdoor condenser unit: A ductless air conditioner contains two components: an indoor and an outdoor unit. Most of your air conditioner’s operation takes place in the outdoor condenser unit, so you won’t hear that much noise inside. While the indoor unit makes a couple of sounds when the cycle first starts, after a few hours, you won’t realize that you have it on. The outdoor condenser is also much smaller than traditional HVAC systems, so it doesn’t include large, loud components.
  • Higher reliability: If you hear noise coming from your HVAC, it’s usually a sign of trouble. Mechanical issues in your air conditioner could start quietly at first, but then get louder when you need to replace some parts. Depending on the type of sounds you hear coming from your HVAC unit, you’d have to call an HVAC technician to remedy the issue. A brand-new ductless mini-split AC has more reliable components that are less likely to break down and make noises.
  • Vibration dampeners: Ductless AC systems muffle the sounds they make through an insulated compressor compartment and vibration dampeners. The purpose of these components is to reduce the decibels of a ductless HVAC motor.

5. Easy Installation and Maintenance

Homeowners enjoy how quick and easy it is to set up a mini-split AC system on their property. Plenty of people do it themselves with minimal help from a local contractor. Over the years, you’ll also save time maintaining your AC and keeping it running for years to come.

Here are some of the reasons why an indoor air conditioner and heating system requires little effort to put into a residential area:

  • You can install it anywhere: Due to their small size and flexibility, you can put a mini-split AC anywhere in the house. You could have multiple handling units connected to one indoor system. Each of the units connects to a thermostat, so you can easily control them. The various people in your living space could set the temperature in their rooms without fighting over the thermostat.
  • It fits in small places: Since ductless mini-split systems are compact, you can fit them in more places than you can install traditional HVAC components. Your reliable ductless HVAC should be the perfect size for even a tiny living space, including an apartment, condo, home addition or garage.
  • It is generally easier to install: The hook-up between the indoor and outdoor units only needs a three-inch hole through a wall to fit the conduit. Most manufacturers can also provide a variety of lengths of connecting wiring. You could use this to your advantage by putting an indoor unit where you need it and the outdoor unit in a more inconspicuous part of the house. Instead of needing to install ducts throughout your living space, you can hook up an indoor and outdoor unit wherever you want in less than a day.
  • It’s easy to clean: To make sure it lasts a long time, the ductless units in your house have washable filters that come right out. All you need to clean the whole system is a couple of clothes, soap and water. Make sure you always turn off the air conditioner before you clean it to prevent injury.
  • It’s easy to access: Central HVAC systems feature a large condenser unit, usually located in a dark, uninviting part of the house, like an attic or crawl space. Since all the parts of your ductless air conditioner are within reach, you can easily access and maintain it.

  1. Hello,
I have a 20 by 25 foot, 500 sq ft, detached building – it is a workshop extra family room with a large porch.
It has 10 foot cealings vaulted to about 15 foot in the center and is insalated, walls & Cealing.
    I would like to add heat & A/C .
I live in Novato Ca so the coldest winter is 35 degrees, and the hottest in summer can get to 98/100 degrees (rare) usually in upper 80’s
I want to be sure that if it is hot, say 100 degrees, I can get the inside to 70 degrees, so I do not want to undersize it.
In addition if it is cold, say 30 degrees, I want to be able to get the inside to 75/78 degrees.
What unit do you propose and why ?
    Thanks

    1. We can’t say exactly the right size with a Manual J load calculation being performed. Best guess would be a 12k or an 18k system, depending on insulation. Heating at 30 degrees or so should not be an issue for any of our mini-splits.

  2. Quiero saber si el mr cool de 24000 btu, 2t tiene capacidad para cuatro habitaciones, no se si trae 4 vaporizadores o como lo hace
    Espero su respuesta

    1. You would need a multi-zone system if you are interested in having four different air handlers heat and cool four different rooms. The 24k DIY is a single-zone unit, so it cannot have more than one air handler. You may be interested in a 27k DIY multi-zone system with 4 air handlers. Take a look at https://mrcooldiy.com/ for more information.

  3. I have got to tell you how grateful we are that you have made a DIY system that the average homeowner can install. Our heat pump went out 4 years ago. We spent over $6,000 on it and only used for less than 8 yrs. only to be told we would need whole new complete system by HVAC technician because the refrigerant changed and whole new system would have to be put in. He priced @ another $6000 to which we said no way. Other unit less than 10 years. Awful!! Saw Mr. Cool ad and told hubby I think we can do this and for lots cheaper. HVAC tech said mini splits no good for manufactured or mobile home which we have double wide 1200 sq. ft. Let me say we bought the 24000 20 seer diy unit and our home here in South Carolina has been the coldest “EVER”. KEEP IT SET ON 69/70 and it is 63- 65 degrees in here everyday. We stay under a blanket because it’s like an icebox in here!! Never seen something cool like this and quiet as a mouse. We used the heat briefly a few months back when we had cold snap and it heated perfectly!! We are two pleased customers of this little system. Ripped out furnace and duct work. So happy with our unit! If you ever need any testers/
demonstrators for your products and would send us a product we’d be happy to oblige!! This system has been a lifesaver. Btw our electric bill has been the lowest…$116 and that’s only because $24 of it is for 2 outside night lights. So the balance is electricity…awesome!

  4. Looking to build a cabin kit, what kind of system would you recommend for this application ?

    1. A mini-split like our DIY is often an excellent choice for cabins, condos, and other vacation homes.

  5. Hello, what type of electrical needs are there for your mini splits? 120v? 15a or 20a service? Are they plugable or direct connect? do they need outside shut offs?

    1. The DIY must be hardwired to an appropriately sized disconnect box. Different units have different electrical requirements. The 12k BTU DIY is a 20A, 110-115V unit. The 18k is a 20A, 208-230V system, and the 24k is a 30A, 208-230V unit. The 36k is a 40A, 208-230V system.

  6. I never knew that installing a ductless air conditioner gives your room a way to eliminate air contaminants. I want to help my friend with his idea of building a game room for his PC. He should invest in these to keep the room’s temperature cool.
